Il y a quasi deux ans (le 20.2.02), iMAL invitait le trio 242.pilots pour un premier concert 'live video improvisation' au Théatre Mercelis à Ixelles. Cet évènement fut une révélation, avec une interview à la RTBF (Cybercafe21) et l'édition DVD par le label Carpark Records [USA] de cette session bruxelloise: '242.pilots : live in Brussels' (ce dvd a récu le prix 'Image' à la Transmediale de Berlin, 2003).

En janvier 2004, le trio 242.pilots est en résidence de travail une semaine chez iMAL et terminera celle-ci par un nouveau concert. L'occassion pour certains de revoir ce trio et suivre son évolution; pour d'autres de découvrir un des meilleurs ensembles actuels explorant ces nouveaux territoires des improvisations images/sons, là où l'audio et la vidéo se génèrent et conversent en temps réel.

242.pilots est un trio d'improvisation proposant des performances de vidéo en temps réel à partir de leurs ordinateurs portables. A la manière des meilleurs ensembles de Jazz, les 3 artistes transposent dans l'univers visuel la richesse et la subtilité de leurs interactions en des conversations audiovisuelles mêlant abstractions, éléments mytho-poétiques, signes, synesthésies et pures délices rétiniens.

L'asbl iMAL est soutenue par la Communauté française de Belgique et la Ville de Bruxelles. Tous nos remerciements à la Commune d'Ixelles, Echevinat de la Culture, pour la mise à disposition du Théatre Mercelis.

Pilots.242 geeft op zondag 25 januari een nieuw concert in Brussel, het resultaat van een werkresidentie bij iMAL. Een uitmuntende gelegenheid het trio pilots.242 aan het werk te zien (in het theater Mercelis te Elsene). Het trio is één van de beste ensembles die zich in nieuwe territoria van de improvisatie beeld/geluid begeven, een territorium waar audio en video mekaar ontmoeten en elkaar in real time beïnvloeden.

Het trio 242.pilots, een improvisatietrio, geeft live videoperformances naar het voorbeeld van de beste jazzensembles. De drie artiesten zetten de rijkdom en de subtiliteit van hun interacties om in audiovisuele gesprekken. Zij mixen abstracte beelden, mytisch-poëtische elementen, tekens, synesthesieën en zuiver visueel genot.

Op uitnodiging van iMal gaf 242.pilots reeds tweetal jaar geleden een "live improvisatie concert", in het theater Mercelis te Elsene (op 20.2.02). Het evenement was een revelatie, nadien gevaloriseerd door een interview van de RTBF (cybercafe21) en een DVD-editie van deze sessie op het Carpark Records (USA); "242.pilots: live in Brussels".

iMAL vzw wordt ondersteund door de Franse Gemeenschap van België en de Stad Brussel. Al onze dank gaat ook uit naar de gemeente Elsene, Schepenambt voor Cultuur, voor het ter beschikking stellen van het Mercelis theater.

Near 2 years ago (on 20.2.02), iMAL invited the 242.pilots trio for a live video improvisation concert at Theater Mercelis. This event was an absolute positive discovery and a success with an interview made by RTBF TV (Cybercafe21 programme), and the publishing by Carpark Records [USA] of this brussels session as a DVD under the title 'live in Brussels' (this DVD was awarded first prize for best image at Transmediale 2002, Berlin). The "Live in Bruxelles" DVD received the Image Award at Transmediale.03 Festival in Berlin.

In Janaury 2004, 242.pilots will be in Brussels at iMAL facilities for a one week working residence. At this occasion, 242.pilots will perform again at Theater Mercelis. A unique opportunity to see this unique trio in their latest investigations. And for those who never experienced 242.pilots live session, this is the occasion to discover one the best laptop live video band exploring these new aesthetics dimensions of live audio+video improvisations, where sound and images merge and converge in real time compositions.

242.pilots expressively improvise rich, layered video works in real-time: as soloists, in duet, and as a trio. The performance software created by Gilje, Ralske, and Lysakowski allows video to be controlled in a fluid and expressive manner. In group improvisation, the three artists respond and interact with each other with the intuitive subtlety found in the best free jazz ensembles. The end product is a complex visual conversation: a quasi-narrative exploring degrees of abstaction, mytho-poetic elements, the nature of the sign, synaesthesia, and raw retinal delight.
