In his recent works Stern, after a year of fighting on World of Warcraft, translated the legends, obsessions and symbols of the subculture he had experienced into art. Emoticon is a perfect example of this. Here, Stern appropriates a wealth of icons and emoticons from online forums and uses them to crown and dress a synthetic goddess - herself an icon - which expresses the various emotions at her command in her own way.

Educated at CalArts, Eddo Stern obtained a Foundation Fellowship in 2005. Since 1998 he has taken part in group exhibitions all over the world, including at the Tate Gallery, Liverpool 2000, the Walker Arts Center, Minneapolis 2000, the Ludwig Museum, Koln 2001, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York 2003 and 2005.
