DorkbotBRU#10

Shaping new objects

Aernoudt Jacobs will present his latest work "Miniatuur", a kinetic sound installation that plays with the physical laws of sound. For this project, he made twenty-five miniature sound objects with the help of digital fabrication. Some of the object holds a tiny speaker and a rotatating reflector. The speaker amplifies field recordings of natural noises like wind, crickets, water... The reflector modulates these sounds in a purely acoustic way by acting on physical aspects: air, reflection and movement. Its circular motion distorts, disrupts, bounces the physical properties of sound waves. The sound changes dynamically, depending on the movement of the flywheel.

Corneel Cannaerts will talk about "Encoded Matter", a project that explores traits – or fingerprints – introduced by low-cost 3D printing driven by computation.  Generating G-Code directly from processing allows control over the overall form of an object but also over the tool-paths, the process of making an object and the resulting materiality. The presented objects are experiments and first iterations of a work in progress.  Encoded Matter was conceived during Generator.x 3.0: From Code to Atoms an openLAB Masterclass at iMAL with Marius Watz."

Finally, Unfold will present L'Artisan Électronique. "In L'Artisan Électronique, pottery, one of the oldest artisanal techniques for making utilitarian objects, is combined with new digital media. However, the installation still clearly refers to the artisanal process of working in clay. The printing process imitates the traditional coiling technique used by ceramists, in which the form is built up by stacking coils of clay. The virtual pottery wheel on the other hand, is a digital, tool to 'turn' forms and objects in thin air."
