@_Network_Table: Learning electronics and building Object Communication & Automation

This hands-on workshop introduces participants to the fundamentals of object-oriented programming through the use of ESP32 microcontrollers, with a focus on electronics, connectivity, and interactive systems. By the end of the workshop, each participant will be able to understand programming logic, connect sensors and actuators, and build simple automation scenarios.

Each participant begins with an ESP32. The first day focuses on setting up the development environment (e.g. Arduino IDE), flashing the microcontroller, and understanding the structure of embedded code. Initial breadboard experiments may be introduced depending on progress.

The second day centers on prototyping. Participants work with beginner-friendly components such as buttons, light sensors, LEDs, or servo motors, building simple cause-and-effect interactions (e.g. triggering light with sound input).

The third day introduces Wi-Fi communication and networked interaction. Participants connect their ESP32 to a shared interface, contributing to a collective digital system, and are introduced to Node-RED for automation.

The final day brings everything together: each participant connects their system to a shared Node-RED server to collaboratively design a collective interactive project, such as a visual installation or responsive environment.

The workshop emphasizes experimentation, collaboration, and learning through making.

Practical info

The workshop takes place over 4 Saturdays in May, from 10:00 to 18:00.

Louanne speaks both English and French.

  • Bring your own laptop
  • Basic knowledge of programming (logic, variables, loops) is recommended
  • No advanced electronics knowledge required

Registration

  • 🎫 The Workshop Ticket is valid for the 4-days workshop (9 + 16 + 23 + 30.05.2026)
  • ✌ The Duo Ticket includes both introduction workshops (@_Network_Table & A Fusion Journey), with a discount!

We have three price categories:

  • Supporter price, if you wish to generously support iMAL
  • Regular price
  • Friendly price for students, job seekers, citizens of Molenbeek, members of our Fablab. You will be asked to present a supporting document at the reception

If genuine financial hardship is preventing you from participating in the event, you can apply for a discounted ticket. Please contact us at cookery [at] imal.org at least two weeks before the workshop.
