Paul Haas & Hemansingh Lutchmun
—
iMAL is pleased to welcome Paul Haas & Hemansingh Lutchmun for one of the three residencies taking place at iMAL in the framework of 25AV - a pan-European platform for audiovisual and performing arts, initiated by five community web radios: Kiosk Radio (Brussels), Radio Raheem (Milan), Radio 80000 (Munich), Stegi Radio (Athens), and Infame Radio (Brno).
During the residency, the artists will develop their project "Integration Loops", a live audiovisual performance that will be presented along the two others in the 25AV night on October 3rd for the special event that will conclude the residencies.
The project brings together two parallel practices: Hemansingh Lutchmun’s long-standing engagement with the material qualities of sound, rhythm, and DJing, and Paul Haas’s ongoing investigation into film and video using both digital and analogue technologies. Recently, Paul has been developing a custom spool system for a 35mm projector that allows him to manually control playback speed and direction, transforming the projector into a performative, tactile instrument. Hemansingh, in turn, has been exploring mechanical sound generation through a system that uses a metal string vibrating within a magnetic field and spool mechanism.
The artists
Paul Haas is interested in the question of how inherited aesthetics and cultural habits shape the present. Through the use of moving images Haas’ work makes historically determined conditions tangible and challenges them.
Paul Haas film practice is characterised by a fusion of documentary and fictional elements that is created in collaboration with both professional and non-professional actors. Haas’ films are marked by an aesthetic that transcends time: costumes, sets, makeup, and dialogue are deliberately drawn from different historical periods. Past events, styles, and behaviors resonate throughout his work, while the narratives remain firmly anchored in the present.
Hemansingh Lutchmun’s practice spans film, sculpture, and installation. In his work, he navigates the intersections of labor, extraction, and displacement, drawing from personal experiences, broader cultural memory, and religious symbolism. His research delves into what shapes personal feelings of belonging and notions of identity within the tension of colonial history and globalized culture, the afterlives of empire and its persisting values, its nostalgia, and the premises of Western civilization. Through an engagement with cultural memories, archives, and inherited habits, he questions how colonial infrastructures continue to define hierarchies of taste, class, and access, and how the personal, the spiritual, and the communal are translated into tangible symbols and revived narratives, shaped by the unobvious remnants of imperial apparatus.
