Can video games become new social spaces for experiencing electronic music? In the research project “Studies on Sonic Dreamspaces and Virtual Environments” Rubén Patiño wants to explore the potential of virtual game spaces as experiential realms for artistic sonic practices. The project is conceived as an examination of the video game as an interactive storytelling medium, and its potential to challenge traditional musical presentation formats. Above all, the investigation will gravitate around the evocative potential of 3D virtual environments as a means to generate imaginary worlds, alternative modes of presence and active listening experiences that transcend the limits of the physical reality. At the same time, the study will focus on the possibilities of gaming interfaces for the creation of immersive sound and interactive musical compositions.
